Suzy's Truetone Radio

Welcome graphic

Everyone else has a web site, so I figured, why not me too? This is my page about my Truetone Model D1845 console. It's a little about me, too, but mainly about the radio. My Grappa bought it for my Granna for Mother's Day in 1948. He took his son (my dad) with him to Western Auto in St. Louis where he purchased it. My Grappa was a mechanic so naturally he would buy his wife a Mother's Day gift at the auto parts store. My dad was only four years old at the time. Grappa bought the radio and loaded it in the car. On the trip home, he explained to his son that the radio was a surprise and that he could not tell Mommy. You know what happens when you tell a little kid a secret that he can't tell. They got home and went in the house and before Grappa could stop him, there were little feet pounding up the stairs and shouts of Mommy, guess what!.... My Granna loved it. She seemed to love everything - she was that kind of person. I was only six when she died, but I can remember how well she took care of it and the way she displayed it even 40 years later with flowers and a doily on top of it. I knew even then that it was very important to her and I'm sure she considered it one of the nicest gifts she had ever received. She had it playing constantly - listening to the ballgame, or her records, or whatever was on. Since it has come to live with us, it has been much less appreciated and is now in need of some serious repair. Since this is a very rare set (although not terribly valuable) I wanted to chronicle my efforts to bring it back into respectable working condition. I probably won't be able to make it like new - but I'm going to get as close as possible.
